Independence National
Historical Park - Independence Hall, long a symbol of liberty, marks
he site of the beginnings of American independence. Constructed between
1732 and 1756, the building later became the Pennsylvania statehouse.
In this building a document drafted by young Thomas Jefferson was read
in 1776 and immediately adopted as the Declaration of Independence. Here
also, the U.S. Constitution was drafted and signed in 1787. Other historic
structures in the park include Congress Hall, where the U.S. Congress
met from 1790 to 1800, and the Liberty Bell Pavilion, housing that revered
symbol of American freedom.
