Forces of Nature

Come, vist and stay "just one more day" --
It's the story that counts!

Appomattox Courthouse - Robert E. Lee, Commanding General of the Army of Northern Virginia, surrendered his men to Ulysses Grant, General-in-Chief of all United States forces, on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse. Imagine the events that signaled the end of the Civil War.

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park - Georgia - Tennensee- Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park - On the fields and hills of this park occurred some of the heaviest fighting between the Union and Confederate armies in 1863. Bitter battles made famous such place-names as Jay's Mill, Snodgrass Hill, Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain, and Chickamauga Creek. The park is composed of several detached areas and has within its grounds many of the 1,400 historic monuments and markers commemorating the battles.

Shiloh National Military Park -Tennessee - Shiloh National Military Park - It is ironic that the name Shiloh, a Biblical term meaning "place of peace," marks the site of one of he most important battles of the Civil War. It was around Shiloh Church that he battle that was to rage for three days before the Confederate troops withdrew.

Antietam National Battlefield - Maryland - Antietam National Battlefield - One of the most important battls of the Civil War took place around Antietam Creek, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862. The battle raged from early morning until dusk. When it was over, a staggering total of 23,114 men lay dead or wounded, making it the most costly single day's loss of the war. The battle was not decisive; the war would go on for two more years.

Vicksburg National Military Park - Mississippi - Vicksburg National Military Park - In 1862 an atempt by Union forces to gain undisputed control of the Mississippi River failed when a naval task force spearheaded by the ironclad gunboat Cairo, was repulsed north of Vicksburg. The Cairo was sunk by electrically detonated mines. More than 100 years later the gunboat was raised from the river bottom and put on display in the USS Cairo Museum adjacent to the Vicksburg National Cemetery.

Manassas National Battlefield Park - Virginia - Manassas National Battlefield Park - The pleasant rolling hills and grassy meadows surrounding a stone-built tavern furnished the locale for the first land battle of the Civil War. It was here the First Battle of Manassas took place on July 21, 1861. The old tavern quickly became a field hospital to treat the wounded. A structure known as the Stone House has been restored to resemble a hospital of the Civil War period.
