North Carlina and Virginia
"America's Favorite Drive" --
Blue Ridge Parkway--
is the most visited unit of America's National Park System.
Two great national parks in the Appalachian
Mountains, Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains, are conneced by 469
miles of beautiful parkway. The road offes scenic vistas along mountain
crests, travels through quiet rural areas, and presents in season a
colorful array of wildflowers from spring until early autumn. Wild animals
are frequently observed along the roadside and in the forests.
National parkways are designed for recreational
motoring rather than for high-speed travel. They have limited access
and ae landscaped and administered to preserve the historic and natural
values of the regions through which they pass. Blue Ridge Parkway is
just one of four parkways administered by the National Park Service.
