History
KC Publications was founded by KC
DenDooven in 1963 in Flagstaff, Ariz., to promote appreciation, understanding
and visitation to the many national parks. The company's nearly 130 titles are
unique because each is written by authentic interpreters from each park. The
firm has sold more than 35 million books to date, covering subjects as diverse
as the Grand Canyon, Statue of Liberty, Hawaiian Volcanoes, Glaciers and
Yosemite.
"I have devoted
45 years to the cause of supporting our wonderful National Parks, educating and
urging both citizens and foreign tourists to visit and to learn about the most
unique nature preservation system on the planet," Mr. DenDooven, 78, stated.
"Each National park site exists because it has some transcendent meaning. It was
designated because an influential group of people saw the site as meaningful and
significant to the values and interests of the American people.
"Our National Parks and other public lands are a heritage of natural beauty that
we pass on from generation to generation," he said. "They stay beautiful because
those who care are dedicated to keeping the land the way it was. This land is
not ours alone but the responsibility to protect it is."
During his nearly half century of building KC Publications, he has worked with
such notable figures as virtually all the National Parks Directors, Arizona
Senator Barry Goldwater, former United States Secretary of the Interior Stuart
Udall, Astrogeologist Eugene Shoemaker and Senator Harry Reid, Speaker of the
House. Mr. DenDooven has appeared in testimony before Congress in support of the
creation of several public lands.
The company offers titles on virtually every major American National Park which
are written by authentic interpreters from each park. Accompanying the text is
full-color photography from renowned professionals, enriched by extended
interpretive captions. The National Parks and National Monument books are
available in two series. "The Story Behind the Scenery" series offers extensive,
factual interpretation of the individual parks and monuments, while the "In
Pictures...Nature's Continuing Story" series features vivid photographic
treatment of the various parks. Foreign language translations of many of the
books are available.
In addition, KC Publications offers its "Voyage of Discovery" series describing
the founding of the Western U.S. through day-to-day experiences of pioneering
emigrants and showing the landscapes and natural barriers they overcame on their
trek. Also available are books on early explorers of the West, such as Lewis and
Clark and John Wesley Powell, as well as individual books on each of the
historic Pony Express, Oregon, California, Santa Fe and Mormon trails as well as
a series on Native Americans.
